Grand Opening & House Snake Care Guide

🎉 Grand Opening: Back to the Branch + House Snake Care Guide

We are thrilled to announce the grand opening of Back to the Branch, your new hub for conservation-focused reptiles and arachnids! 🐍 Our mission is to preserve vulnerable species, educate enthusiasts, and provide ethically bred, healthy animals for your collections.

To celebrate, we’re kicking off our weekly blog series with a spotlight on one of our favorites: House Snakes (Lamprophis sp.). Each week, we’ll explore a different species—covering care tips, breeding insights, and conservation facts—so you can enjoy and learn about these amazing animals while supporting our preservation mission.

🏡 Spotlight: House Snake Care Guide

House snakes are docile, hardy, and beginner-friendly, making them a great choice for hobbyists and educators alike. Here’s everything you need to know to provide a happy, healthy home:

Housing:

  • Enclosure: 30 gallon tanks or EcoFlex 36"
  • Substrate: Aspen shavings, or coconut chips / fiber / bioactive
  • Hides: Provide at least 2–3 hides to help your snake feel secure
  • Temperature: 78–85°F (25–29°C) with a slightly warmer basking area
  • Humidity: 40–60%, moderate to prevent respiratory issues

Feeding:

  • Diet: Appropriately sized mice about 10% of the snakes weight
  • Frequency: Babies & Juveniles every 5–7 days, adults every 7–14 days
  • Water: Always provide fresh water and remove uneaten food promptly

Behavior & Handling:

  • Generally calm and easy to handle
  • Crepuscular/nocturnal activity patterns
  • Wash hands before and after handling to reduce stress

Health Tips:

  • Keep the enclosure clean and provide proper hides one on both the hot and cool side
  • Monitor for shedding problems or respiratory issues
  • House snakes thrive in low-stress environments
