Bloodlines & Provenance
“We know where our birds came from, and we're committed to documenting where their descendants go.”
Cackle Hatchery-Origin Genetics
A portion of BGT's foundation stock originates from Cackle Hatchery, whose established breeding programs provide decades of documented historical lineage for our foundational pens:
- Blue Rosecomb Bantam: Foundation strain maintained since ~1979.
- Black & Blue Sumatra: Long-maintained foundational Sumatra program dating to ~1979.
- Porcelain d'Uccle Bantam: Documented bantam strain established ~1987.
- Spangled Appenzeller Spitzhauben: Silver Spangled program dating to ~1991 with subsequent imports.
Sumatra Provenance & Zoo Genetics
BGT's Black, Blue, and upcoming Splash Sumatra program deliberately draws from multiple distinct foundation sources to maximize genetic vigor and phenotypic integrity:
- Cackle Hatchery Foundation Lines: Established long-term domestic lineage.
- Zoo-Sourced Bloodlines: Documented zoological stock integrated to broaden the gene pool, preserve ancient landrace type, and retain rare phenotypic traits.
Rather than grouping all Sumatra stock under an anonymous label, BGT maintains granular pedigree records tracking individual bird origins and line percentages.
BGT Selective Breeding & Development Criteria
While foundation sources provide the historical ancestry, BGT's mission is the rigorous evaluation, selection, and generational enhancement of these genetics:
Active Preservation Bloodlines
Our four foundational breeding programs developed for structural vigor, breed type, and genetic purity.
Blue Rosecomb Bantam
Aristocratic British true bantam with solid slate-blue plumage (Bl/bl+), circular white earlobes, and a classic square rose comb with leader spike.
Sumatra (Black, Blue & Splash)
Ancient Indonesian landrace with beetle-green black and slate-blue plumage (with upcoming splash variants), multiple spurs, gypsy face, and sweeping sickles.
Appenzeller Spitzhauben
Historic Swiss alpine landrace bred to thrive in mountainous climates. Renowned for its forward-pointing feathered crest, horn comb, and exceptional cold hardiness.
Porcelain Belgian d'Uccle
A true bantam masterpiece featuring lavender (isabel) dilute mille fleur plumage, full beard, muffs, and heavy foot feathering. Known for its calm temperament.
Scientific Breeding & Genetic Tracking
In poultry genetics, females are the heterogametic sex (ZW) while males are homogametic (ZZ). We map every pairing through Punnett matrices and sex-linked inheritance models to eliminate recessive defects and lock in desired plumage and structural traits.
Blue & Splash Sumatra and Rosecomb Andalusian blue dilution tracking.
Selection for small frost-resistant combs and high winter vitality.
Avian manure is composted to enrich regenerative crops.
